Imagine the utter shock of the man who lives here to come out to use the bathroom at 730am to find me brushing my teeth as if I owned the yard. He scratched his head and returned inside with the unspoken motivation of simply going back to bed Imagine the utter shock of the man who lives here to come out to use the bathroom at 730am to find me brushing my teeth as if I owned the yard. A common shack in the back yard of a regular home in Guguletu township, Cape Town. The homes are simply not sufficient in size to serve a nuclear family by modern standards, much less the average S.African family, which tends to be extended and has 2x the number of children we do in the States. Most families that are lucky enough to even own a home tend to build the shacks to deal with the overflow, and/or rent out the shacks they build to others to establish a significant source of income that would otherwise be non-existent. this man came stumbling out of an alley and I thought “damn he is drunk, and what the hell is up with his belly?” Turns out he ran into his shack to get dressed up because he heard a journalist was here filming.
